Council continues hearing on partial closure of Plum Street after safety concerns

Stanley Mayor Cathy Kirkland and council members agreed May 13 to continue a public hearing on whether to permanently close a portion of Plum Street, scheduling the next session for June 2 at 6:00 p.m.
Council Member Leigh Anna Helms told the council the road had been temporarily closed after a leak and a washout and that heavy truck and tractor‑trailer traffic on the stretch had heightened concerns about a possible sinkhole and further damage. Helms said repairing the roadway might be ‘‘a waste of funds’’ if the council ultimately decides to make the closure permanent and convert the area to pocket parking.
Mayor Kirkland moved to continue the hearing to allow additional evidence and public input; the motion, made by Council Member Marsha Miskelly and seconded by Council Member Chad Jones, passed unanimously. The council did not make a final decision and requested more information to guide whether to repair the road or pursue permanent closure and design changes.
