Cramerton wins $250,000 FEMA BRIC planning grant for Baltimore Drive culvert project

The Town of Cramerton has been awarded a FEMA BRIC C&CB Planning and Design grant of $250,000 for the Baltimore Drive Culvert Replacement project, Stormwater Administrator Chase Sturgis told the Board of Commissioners on Nov. 14.
Sturgis said the C&CB grant is a competitive planning-and-design award and that the town must provide a $50,000 match, which has already been accounted for in the FY24/25 stormwater budget. He told the board staff initially considered applying for a construction grant but chose the planning/design award to ensure a thorough design for a project that presents complications — the Baltimore neighborhood currently has a single ingress and egress and construction could require road closures.
Sturgis said the planning and design funds will help the town reduce the chances of construction complications by producing a well-thought-out design and minimization plans for disruptions. The board recognized the grant award during the meeting; no formal vote was required to accept the grant as presented in staff reports.
The next steps implied by the presentation include using the planning and design funds to complete engineering and construction planning; permitting and a potential future construction grant or contract would require separate board action and likely additional funding.
