Carolina Thread Trail: Cramerton is halfway to planned 8.7-mile network; board hears parks, lighting and staffing updates

Carolina Thread Trail representatives presented to the Cramerton Board of Commissioners on Jan. 16, reporting that 4.5 miles of trails currently exist in town and that planned routes would bring total mileage to 8.7.
Ashton Lamb and Bret Baronak described services the Carolina Thread Trail (CTT) offers, including grant-writing, planning assistance, landowner outreach and education programs. The presenters said existing trail mileage in Cramerton is 4.5 miles (2.6 paved, 0.7 natural surface, 0.8 sidewalks and 0.4 miles on street) and the planned additional mileage is 4.2 miles (2.7 paved, 1.0 natural surface, 0.5 sidewalks) for a grand total of 8.7 miles. The presenters noted that much of the planned mileage is expected to be built by private developers as part of residential projects and that CTT has provided $315,750 to the town across seven projects through its implementation grant program since 2009.
The board also addressed several parks and recreation items. The Parks and Recreation Committee reported three vacant committee seats that have limited its activity; commissioners expressed interest in filling those seats to resume planned programming. Commissioner Jennifer Ramsey reported the community committee finalized bylaws and is planning recreation events for the coming months.
Town Manager Zach Ollis presented a lighting quote for Timberlake: four poles at a cost of $13,010, noting a budget amendment will be needed to proceed. Ollis said staff should begin procurement and the board agreed to move forward with initial steps.
During the consent portion of the meeting the board appointed members to the Cramerton Economic Development Advisory Committee (CEDAC) and approved the consent agenda; the January 2, 2024 minutes were removed earlier in the meeting for amendment and were later approved as amended. (Note: the meeting packet lists a consent-minute date of Dec. 12, 2024; that appears to be a typographical error in the packet; the correct meeting date is Dec. 12, 2023.)
Planning Department staff (Josh Watkins) said updates to the Land Development Code are ongoing and that staff intend a joint meeting with the Planning Board with the goal of having the updates ready for adoption by May. Stormwater Administrator Chase Sturgis told the board the town’s Stormwater Ordinance has been finalized and will be presented for approval soon.
The board ended the meeting after a closed-session consultation with the town attorney and adjourned at 9:09 p.m.
