Summary
The Town of Cramerton on March 19 approved text amendment TA23-02 to allow mobile food vendors on private property in nonresidential districts under time, distance and environmental safeguards; the vote was unanimous.
The Town of Cramerton Board of Commissioners on March 19 unanimously approved text amendment TA23-02 to permit mobile food vendors on private property in nonresidential districts under a set of operational standards.
Assistant Town Manager Josh Watkins presented the amendment, telling the board the proposed ordinance would allow mobile food vendors on a more intermittent basis than in some neighboring communities and would add standards for hours of operation, distance from fire hydrants and setbacks from waterways such as the South Fork River to reduce the risk of spills and litter reaching waterways.
The measure drew one public commenter. Nicole Matthews thanked the board for considering citizen input submitted by email and for the notice she received about the proposal.
The Planning Board recommended a limited, intermittent approach rather than semi-permanent siting. Commissioner Scott Kincaid moved to approve TA23-02; Commissioner Jennifer Ramsey seconded the motion. The board voted 5–0 in favor.
Why it matters: the change allows mobile vendors more flexibility while giving the town standards to protect public safety and the environment. The ordinance text adopted by the board specifies the categories of restrictions discussed by staff; specifics such as exact permitted hours or the precise setback distances are established in the ordinance language included in the town packet and were adopted with the amendment.
The amendment takes effect as provided in the town’s ordinance-adoption procedures. Staff said they will administer the new standards under the town’s code and zoning enforcement processes.
