Richland resident urges caution on police use of AI to draft body‑cam reports

"I would ask the city council to be very cautious in entertaining such a proposed use of AI and be diligent in vetting such a technology," Jean Stava told the council, citing an ACLU white paper and a recent news example in which an AI tool produced an erroneous, sensational output.
Stava said police reports play an important role in investigations and prosecutions and warned that introducing novel language‑generation tools raises risks of unreliability, bias and transparency problems.
Council members responded in the meeting. Council member Witten said the department would likely use AI as an aid rather than fully automate reports and emphasized oversight: "I do understand that the Richland Police Department would not just offload that onto AI without having some kind of oversight on that," he said.
Council member Meyer urged disclosure when government employees use AI, saying the public should know when such tools are deployed in drafting official products. "I personally would like to see any government employee using AI to draft anything be disclosed as part of that final product," he said.
City staff did not present a formal policy at the Feb. 3 meeting; councilmembers asked staff to continue work on appropriate safeguards, oversight, and disclosure practices before any operational adoption.
