The Westport Board of Selectmen, acting as the Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA), approved a supplemental sewer connection request Jan. 28 for property at 326 Post Road West seeking a detached three‑bedroom auxiliary dwelling unit (ADU). WPCA General Manager Brian Thompson explained the application and the utility’s approach to assessments and inflow‑and‑infiltration (I&I) abatement fees.
Under the WPCA’s accounting, one unit assessment for the sewer extension (contract 60) was stated as $9,041.51; that charge will be amortized and assessed beginning July 1, 2027. Separately, the I&I abatement fee — intended to fund work to remove erroneous inflow and infiltration that increases the system’s treatment load — for a single‑family dwelling was stated as $7,929.18 and is payable before a zoning permit will be issued.
Board members discussed ADU growth and sewer‑system capacity concerns during the presentation. One selectman said they were uncomfortable approving a 3‑bedroom ADU without further context; others moved forward, and the motion to approve the supplemental connection passed with a record in the transcript that one member would not vote and another abstained from voting at that moment.
Next steps: the applicant will be notified and required to pay the I&I abatement fee; the assessment will be placed on the 2027 billing cycle and amortized in accord with WPCA procedures.
