The Westport Board of Selectmen on Jan. 28 approved a $128,000 contract with Snyder Engineering for design, permitting and construction documents to replace and modernize the water service at Longshore Park. Director of Public Works Pete Rakowitz said much of the park’s water infrastructure dates to the 1930s and is undersized and degraded; the main goal is to design a new distribution main and laterals so buildings in the park will be separately metered.
Rakowitz explained that some private properties currently draw unmetered water through the town system because the original park system predated later property sales. Under the new design the town intends to provide separate metering and reduce operational risk from a pipe that has accreted and lost capacity over many decades. Snyder Engineering was chosen for its experience with Aquarion interfaces and local utility work; staff said design drawings should be ready by early summer to seek approvals from Aquarion and the state health department.
Selectmen approved the award by voice vote. Staff indicated construction would likely be timed to minimize disturbance to the golf season and that further design decisions (routing, connections and optional laterals) will be resolved during Snyder’s work.
