Public hearing on Star Meadows Fire District yields strong local support; commissioners table decision to Dec. 18

Residents and proponents urged Flathead County commissioners to approve a petition to create the Star Meadows Fire District, saying distance from existing services has driven steep fire‑insurance premiums and delayed response times.

Daniel Yeh (proponent/representative) told the commission that property owners in the Stillwater/Star Meadows area have faced rate increases and non‑renewals from insurers following catastrophic wildfires elsewhere, and presented the proposed fire district as a solution to improve local protection and insurability. Several residents, including Julie (no last name given) and Chris Donner, spoke in support and thanked private funders and organizers for their work.

Jasmine Morton, who identified herself as an attorney and said she represents the Homestead Fire Company, described a two‑step path: (1) authorize the fire district formation and (2) later consider governance options and service contracts. County legal staff and the commissioners discussed procurement rules, the difference between having commissioners act as a taxing board versus appointing a separate trustee board, indemnification and audit implications if the district remains administered under county authority, and whether a district would appear on the tax roll in time for next year.

After legal counsel advised the commission that findings and a public decision will be required and noted procurement and funding constraints, a commissioner moved to table the petition to a time‑specific reconvening on Dec. 18 to allow staff to prepare required findings and to clarify tax and procurement effects. The motion was seconded and carried.
