Clarke County supervisors vote to eliminate courthouse security position

The action took place at a special session at the Clarke County Courthouse called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman Randy Dunbar. The meeting record lists Auditor Jessica Graves, Sheriff Rob Kovacevhich and Osceola Sentinel Editor Candra Brooks among those present.
Members of the public spoke during the meeting with differing views. Some attendees said the Courthouse Security role—naming the incumbent, George Barber—provides an on-site law enforcement presence that helps prevent incidents from escalating. Other commenters argued the position is a poor use of county resources and suggested the duties would be better served by redeploying the position to road work.
Following public comment, Supervisor Dean Robins introduced the motion described in Res-26-035 “to approve a reduction in force to eliminate Courthouse Security position,” which Supervisor Brian Sorensen seconded. The board recorded the vote as “Ayes”: Randy Dunbar, Dean Robins and Brian Sorensen; no nays were recorded. The resolution was signed the same day.
With no further business, Supervisor Brian Sorensen moved to adjourn; Supervisor Dean Robins seconded. The meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m., and Auditor Jessica Graves attested to the minutes.
