City explores taking over animal-control contract and upgrading pound

Orangeville planning commissioners heard on Feb. 10 that city leaders have discussed with county commissioners the possibility of Orangeville taking over the county’s animal-control contract.
Doug Stilson reported that the county currently contracts with a veterinarian to handle stray animals and that Mayor Bell has discussed with county officials whether Orangeville might assume the contract. Taking on the contract would likely require updating the animal pound on Mill Dam Road and could generate additional city revenue and staffing needs, including a potential part-time hire for animal-control duties, Stilson said.
No agreements or funding sources were announced. The commission received the report as informational and did not vote on the matter. Stilson said the city will continue discussions with county commissioners to clarify responsibilities, costs and operational implications.
