Del Valle ISD trustees approve Fulbright leave resolution and appoint assistant principal

The move came after public comment praising a district teacher who won a Fulbright award. Brett Covington told the board he and colleagues were “so proud of her” and urged trustees to provide “maximum flexibility and support” so the teacher could take advantage of the opportunity and return to share research with students and staff.
Dr. Gutierrez presented the board self-evaluation materials earlier in the meeting, noting a summary sheet with trustees’ ratings and target goals is included in members’ binders and will be shared with the Texas Education Agency. Trustees asked whether the evaluation would be posted to the district website; one trustee said evaluations typically post online after formal adoption as part of the district’s LSG process.
The board moved into closed session for consultations with legal counsel and personnel matters under Texas Government Code sections 551.071, 551.074 and 551.076, then returned to open session at about 7:05 p.m. In open session Trustee Franco moved to approve the Fulbright leave resolution; Trustee Sierra seconded. The president announced, “Motion carries nine-zero. Oh, eight-zero. I’m sorry,” reflecting a correction to the vote tally; the final announced outcome was recorded as 8–0 in favor.
Later the board considered the superintendent’s recommendation to hire Tanya D'Amamillo as assistant principal at Ojeda (Bridal) School. Secretary Wagner moved to approve the appointment, Trustee Pantoja seconded, and the board approved the hire by an 8–0 vote.
Trustees congratulated the district’s Fulbright award recipient and said a photo would be taken at the conclusion of the meeting. The board adjourned at 7:08 p.m.
The meeting included routine procedural items: the president called the meeting to order at 6:18 p.m., outlined public comment rules (three-minute limit, one-minute warning by Secretary Wagner), and reviewed the self-evaluation framework in members’ binders.
