Dickinson High handbook revisions to add CTE pathways, GPA-waiver and dual-credit changes approved

The Dickinson ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved proposed updates to the Dickinson High School academic handbook for 2026.
"It's going to allow more students to take athletics slash non-weighted electives without hurting their GPA," the DHS presenter said, describing a new GPA-waiver program that permits one pass/fail course per year if a student meets the stated qualifications and elects the waiver before the class ends. The presenter said students must have an A in the class to choose the waiver and the course will be counted as pass/fail and excluded from the GPA calculation.
Trustees also approved revisions to weighted-course options so that all courses offering college credit will be placed on a 6.0 scale; the district removed references to Texas College Bridge because it will no longer count toward the CCMR indicator. The board approved new CTE programs that will launch alongside the district's new CTE center, including culinary arts, cybersecurity, firefighting, HVAC and process technology, and authorized additional AP and dual-credit courses such as AP Physics 1, Foundations of Cybersecurity, and expanded Spanish dual credit.
For the Collegiate High School program the board approved lowering the GPA threshold from 3.0 to 2.8, requiring three DHS faculty recommendations, and setting a firm application deadline for the 2026 cohort. The presenter said the district will move the dual-credit application deadline to March 1 to align with course selection timelines.
Next steps: staff will implement the handbook changes in time for the 2026-27 school year, publish updated student materials and update application materials for Collegiate High and dual-credit courses.
