Del Valle Education Association urges raises for paraprofessionals, nurses and teachers

Jessica Marquez, a math teacher at Del Valle High School and president of the Del Valle Education Association, used the board's public comment period to press the board on compensation priorities as the district prepares its 2026–27 budget.
Marquez said the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) "is a pay scheme dreamed up by right wing forces to seek the dismantle of public education," and argued the allotment risks replacing systemwide pay increases with pay tied for a few teachers to test scores. "We should never accept TIA as a preferred method for determining teacher compensation," she said.
Marquez outlined specific district requests for the coming year: a $3 per hour raise for paraprofessionals and auxiliary staff (including aides, secretaries, cafeteria workers, custodians, maintenance, bus drivers and monitors), restoring librarians and nurses to the teacher pay schedule, and a 4% raise for teachers based on salary (rather than midpoint) and 4% for administrative pay plans. She framed the proposals as necessary to address cost‑of‑living pressures and to improve staff retention.
"Retention of staff is essential in delivering consistent implementation of academic programs that will serve to improve student outcomes," Marquez said.
Her remarks were followed by trustees' discussion of the budget presentation; trustees did not take immediate action in response to the public comment but the requests entered the board's budget deliberations.
