The Virginia Board of Dentistry’s regulatory panel recommended on May 16 that the full Board fast-track amendments to allow dental hygienists to perform certain restorative procedures without registering as a Dental Assistant II (DAII).
Erin Barrett, Director of Legislative and Regulatory Affairs, told the panel the draft amendments to Chapters 21, 25 and 30 — informed by a state comparison chart on dental hygienists’ restorative duties — would create a restorative pathway for hygienists while removing the need to hold DAII registration. The panel discussed the proposed changes and noted they would reduce administrative burden and cost for hygienists and be impactful across the dental community.
Dr. Sultan E. Chaudhry moved that the regulatory committee recommend adoption of the fast-track amendments to the full Board at its June 2025 meeting; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously. The minutes record the recommendation without a recorded dissent.
The panel’s action is a recommendation to the full Board; any regulatory change will be effective only after the full Board considers and, if it approves, completes the formal regulatory process required under Virginia law.
