Commissioners sign Montana Historic Preservation grant materials, retain bank securities

Daniels County commissioners approved signing the commitment of funds and related materials for a Montana Historic Preservation grant and declined to release securities held with Independence Bank after Treasurer Julia Laurie said she was uncomfortable doing so.
On Feb. 17 the Daniels County Board reviewed and approved journal vouchers and the Treasurer's January 2026 reports and securities held with Independence Bank. Commissioner Linder moved, and Commissioner Thievin seconded, to sign the commitment of funds letter, contact sheet and project summary for a Montana Historic Preservation grant; the Board voted in favor.
Treasurer Julia Laurie and Deputy Treasurer Katie Leibrand met with the Board to discuss releasing securities with Independence Bank. Laurie said she was not comfortable releasing securities that cover county accounts; the Board agreed not to release the securities at that time.
The Board also accepted an employee resignation and approved routine claims and journal vouchers recorded in the minutes. The minutes do not specify grant award amounts or detailed funding sources for the preservation project; the materials were approved for signature so the county can proceed with submission and required commitments.
