Residents urge commissioners to keep a public health department in Daniels County

At the Feb. 2 session of the Daniels County Board of County Commissioners, a group of residents spoke in support of retaining a county public health department. Residents LeeAnn Danelson, Casey Danelson, Katrina Danelson, Valita Nelson, Linda Hersel, Mary Nyhus and Tammy Cahill attended to press the Board to maintain local public‑health services. Mary Nyhus read a letter of support from Kelsey Haugo‑Lund.
Commissioner Fladager told the Board she has been in contact with state officials about outstanding task orders and the deliverables tied to them. She noted One Health (formerly Custer County Public Health) provides services such as immunizations, screenings and health education. The minutes record that “nothing definitive is happening,” and the Board did not take a formal vote or issue a decision at the meeting.
The public comments came during the regular meeting’s public‑comment period; the Board said it would continue communications with state contacts while residents and local leaders await further updates.
