Senate adopts joint resolution honoring former lawmaker Jeffrey Evangelos

A joint resolution honoring the life and public service of Jeffrey Evangelos was read and adopted in concurrence by the Maine Senate on the motion of members from both chambers.
The secretary read the resolution memorializing Evangelos, who began public service as a town manager in 1976, served as a school business manager and represented coastal communities in the state House. The resolution cited his work on criminal justice reform, Wabanaki sovereignty and a proposal to restore parole in Maine.
Senators offered personal tributes on the floor. One senator said Evangelos “was a pivotal figure in some of my early days in the House,” calling him a mentor and “an incredible, passionate leader.” Senator Talbot Ross described Evangelos as “fearless” in speaking truth to power and recalled working with him on the Judiciary Committee. Senator Hickman highlighted Evangelos’s advocacy for food sovereignty and his commitment to incarcerated people, saying he “spoke truth and shamed the devil.” Senator Carney noted Evangelos’s role in establishing the deadly-force review panel as a meaningful legacy.
A memorial at the Maine State Prison was announced for March 20 and members invited the public to attend. The Senate adopted the joint resolution in concurrence and agreed to adjourn in his memory.
The resolution directs that, upon adjournment, the legislature record the token of sympathy and condolence to Evangelos’s family and community.
