Ector County ISD highlights student awards and new National Board‑certified teachers

The Ector County Independent School District used part of its Dec. 16 meeting to recognize student and staff achievements.
Student and teacher recognitions: Megan Walsh, principal of Wilson Young Middle School, introduced two students who led the pledge and provided brief bios. The board announced three student artists whose work will appear on the district’s holiday card: elementary winner Alize Zubia (Hayes STEAM Academy), middle‑school winner Madeline Carrillo (Bonham), and high‑school winner Lali Luton (Odessa High School). Teachers and family members were invited forward to receive framed artwork and copies of the card.
Teacher certifications and College Board honors: Staff announced three teachers who earned National Board certification — Shanti (Santi) Priya Bataram, Claudia Ruiz Arbizu and David Atkins — and described the rigors and benefits of the certification. The district also reported that 130 ECISD students received a total of 162 College Board national recognitions this year, up markedly from 48 students the prior year; eligibility requires PSAT or AP performance and a cumulative GPA threshold, staff said.
Why it matters: District leaders said the recognitions help students and teachers build stronger college and scholarship credentials and celebrate classroom achievement across campuses.
