The City Commission of North Port reaffirmed the city’s Purple Heart City designation on Jan. 8 and accepted the Van of Valor as a permanent local memorial and educational resource.
A proclamation recounted the city’s original Purple Heart City declaration in 2015 (file 14-0781) and described the Van of Valor’s national pilgrimage: organizers reported more than 27,000 miles driven and 312 interviews with Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families, memorializing over 400 fallen service members. Lauren Wallace, identified in the transcript as a cofounder of the Van of Valor Project, told the commission the project ‘‘was never political. It was always human’’ and said the van will serve as a ‘‘rolling archive’’ and educational center.
The commission’s proclamation designates the Van of Valor as North Port’s Purple Heart Legacy Memorial and a stop on the National Purple Heart Trail. Lauren and Kevin Wallace said the designation will allow the van’s stories to be preserved locally through educational programs, signage to welcome visitors and annual remembrance events.
The mayor presented a certificate recognizing Kevin P. Wallace as a combat-wounded veteran and Bronze Star with Valor and thanked the couple for entrusting the archive to the city. The action is ceremonial and does not create a budget appropriation; the city said it will coordinate signage and programming with the van’s organizers.
