North Port readies Tallahassee talking points and accepts county’s joint-meeting invitation

The North Port City Commission voted 5–0 on Jan. 20 to ask city staff to prepare a one-page set of talking points for an upcoming trip to Tallahassee and to work with Sarasota County staff to schedule a joint meeting of the two commissions.
City Manager Fletcher briefed the commission on the January 7 letter from Sarasota County Administrator Johnson Lewis inviting a joint meeting and said staff planned to assemble brief talking points for the commission’s visits to legislators next week. Fletcher recommended emphasizing items such as the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the local impacts of potential property tax reductions.
Vice Mayor Langdon moved and Commissioner Stokes seconded a motion directing the city manager to prepare supplemental talking points addressing the potential impact of property tax cuts on the city’s ability to provide services and to present the EOC as a state funding request; the commission approved the motion 5–0.
Separately, Commissioner Stokes moved and Vice Mayor Langdon seconded a motion directing the city manager to coordinate with Sarasota County to schedule a joint meeting; that motion also passed 5–0. Commissioners emphasized that the fall is the likely timeframe and asked staff to return possible dates and suggested topics, including property-tax impacts, annexation and regional service coordination.
What’s next: staff will prepare the one-page talking points for use during the Tallahassee trip and will work with the Sarasota County administrator on scheduling and topics for a joint meeting in 2026.
