Public commenters raise vendor-contract cancellation, death investigation and neighborhood parking concerns

Latasha Mann, owner of Classy Chicks Event Planning and Catering, said Parks & Recreation sent a termination notice for her Ironwood contract (contract started 2024-12-02; termination notice dated 2026-01-30 with move-out by 2026-03-31). Mann said she believes the cancellation followed retaliatory treatment by on-site city staff and cited specific operational problems and alleged staff misconduct, asking the commission to investigate and to ensure future vendors are treated fairly.
Rena Demps spoke on behalf of her son, Tyrone Lamar Davis Jr., saying he died while visiting Gainesville and that the family has not received definitive answers about the circumstances. Demps asked the city manager’s office and police to follow up and provide information; the mayor asked staff to have the manager’s office meet with her after the meeting.
A resident at 1720 Southwest 37th Street described 12 years of repeated problems with a nearby apartment complex (Varsity House), including blocked driveways, parking at blind curves, verbal abuse from residents and a pattern of repeated calls to police without enforcement. The resident said the conduct occurs on public space and asked the manager’s office to follow up; the mayor directed the manager’s office to connect with the speaker after the meeting.
The administration acknowledged the comments and offered follow-up contacts for each speaker. No formal action was taken during the meeting based on those comments, but staff committed to follow up on each item.
