Rockdale County approves $4.26M Axon contract to replace Tasers, consolidate cameras

The Rockdale County Board of Commissioners ratified a multi‑year contract with Axon Enterprise on Jan. 13 that consolidates taser replacements and countywide camera systems and runs from January 2026 through January 2030.
Major Tate of the sheriff’s office told the board the change was driven by device lifecycle and liability concerns: "The changing from Taser 7 over to Taser 10 is because of the end of life of that particular model," he said, adding that after vendors stop supporting a device it can create "a challenge to the county." Tate framed the acquisition as a public‑safety investment intended to give deputies additional less‑lethal options.
A county staff member clarified that the Axon agreement is not limited to tasers. "This consolidates several contracts and it's not just the taser," the staff member said. "Axon is also inclusive of the body cameras as well as the fleet cameras." The contract was presented as budgeted and funded through the general fund and was submitted for ratification.
Board members discussed the cost and the safety rationale before moving the item as part of the consent agenda. The motion to approve items that included the Axon contract carried by voice vote.
