Commission approves land‑use and zoning changes to allow Alachua County Sheriff’s Office expansion

The City Commission approved a two‑part city action on March 5 to enable a modest expansion of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. Planning staff presented a land‑use amendment to change approximately 1.87 acres from single‑family to public and institutional facilities and a companion rezoning to Public Services and Operations (PS).

Planner Ari Rubinovich explained staff’s review found the application consistent with the comprehensive plan’s goals on providing civic facilities, discouraging sprawl and enabling compatible public uses; the parcel is county‑owned and abuts the existing sheriff’s office. Staff said adopted levels of service for transportation, stormwater and utilities will be evaluated during development review and no final development order will be issued until levels of service are satisfied.

There were no speakers at the public hearing opposing the change. Commissioners asked about adjacent parcels and the history of the site; staff said the sheriff’s office occupied neighboring property for many years and the proposed change would logically extend the county’s institutional use. The commission adopted both the land‑use ordinance and the zoning ordinance by roll call vote with all present members voting aye and two commissioners absent.
