Mountain Brook City Schools board delays vote on updated social studies curriculum framework

The Mountain Brook Board of Education on May 19 voted to table a proposed Social Studies Curriculum Framework to allow for community review and input.
Dr. Missy Brooks, the district’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction, said state changes to the social studies curriculum motivated the proposed update and warned that “our students would miss content if a new curriculum framework was not adopted.” After discussion, the board voted to table the framework until the next meeting to solicit public feedback (motion by Nicky Barnes, seconded by Daniel Odrezin).
Why it matters: curriculum frameworks guide scope and sequencing for classroom instruction. The board’s decision to delay a vote gives families and other stakeholders an opportunity to review the proposed framework before the board considers adoption.
The Social Studies Framework will return for consideration at the next regularly scheduled board meeting on June 9, 2025; the board asked staff to distribute the framework for community comment and report back.
