Mountain Brook Board approves routine business, tables 2028–29 calendar and curriculum adoptions for community review

The Board of Education of the City of Mountain Brook met on Feb. 9, 2026, at Mountain Brook High School and approved a suite of routine items while tabling two major items for further public review.
Dr. Richard Barlow, superintendent, recommended the board approve the minutes of the Jan. 12, 2026 work session and board meeting, the financial statements and cash balances for the month ending January 2026, personnel recommendations and declared surplus items as submitted. Motions to approve were made and seconded by board members (minutes: moved by Mrs. Anna Comer, seconded by Mrs. Anne Schilleci; financials: moved by Mrs. Anne Schilleci, seconded by Mrs. Anna Comer; personnel: moved by Mrs. Anna Comer, seconded by Mrs. Anne Schilleci; surplus: moved by Mrs. Anne Schilleci, seconded by Mrs. Anna Comer). Each motion was recorded as "Unanimously Approved." The minutes list Mrs. Jenifer Kimbrough as Board President; Mrs. Anna Comer as Board Vice President; and Mrs. Anne Schilleci as a board member. Mr. Jeffrey Brewer and Mr. Daniel Odrezin were absent.
The board addressed two items of broader community interest. Mr. Donald Clayton, director of administrative services, reported that a committee had drafted a proposed academic calendar for 2028–2029. The board voted to table the proposed calendar until the March 9, 2026 meeting to allow time for community review and input. Similarly, Dr. Missy Brooks, director of curriculum and instruction, reported that committees had identified candidate resources for arts education and social studies; the board voted to table both materials adoptions until March 9 for community review and input.
Each tabling motion passed by the same unanimous vote among members present. The board announced its next regular meeting for March 9, 2026, at 3:30 p.m., with a work session at 2:00 p.m. at Mountain Brook Board of Education offices, 32 Vine Street. The meeting adjourned at 4:11 p.m.
