Council approves police pension change to boost line-of-duty injury benefits

The Vanderburgh County Council approved a modification to the county police pension plan on Jan. 7 that increases benefits for deputies who suffer debilitating line-of-duty injuries.
Sheriff Noah Robinson described the change as a targeted update to provide enhanced benefits when a deputy is permanently disabled in the line of duty and to ensure the maximum benefit available by law is provided in catastrophic cases such as permanent paralysis. Robinson said the substantive change was limited to Article 3 (disability benefits) and that other plan provisions were not altered beyond some definitional clarifications.
Council members sought and received confirmation that funding (Article 7) and other payout mechanisms were unchanged. After brief discussion and legal review of the document, the council approved the modification by voice vote and expressed appreciation for the sheriff’s attention to deputy welfare.
The modification includes clarified definitions (for example, 'catastrophic injury') and an explicit enhanced benefit for qualifying on-duty injuries; staff said fiscal impacts are limited to the additional benefits paid for line-of-duty injuries.
