Council names new leadership and approves board appointments

The Vanderburgh County Council elected new leadership and approved a slate of board appointments at its Jan. 7 meeting.
The council voted to elect a new council president following a motion and second; the nominee was confirmed unanimously. The council also elected Jill Hahn as vice president by voice vote and affirmed Jeff Eilers as county attorney.
Council members then announced committee and liaison assignments, naming the finance and personnel chairs and listing members’ board appointments, from central dispatch and the convention and visitors bureau to the county library and redevelopment commission. The council voted to approve the slate of appointments; Kurt Kiefer’s appointment to the Alcohol Beverage Board was approved with one abstention recorded.
Council members asked that appointees provide the council with more regular updates. A motion directing staff to send appointment letters asking each board appointee to provide agendas, minutes and a one-page quarterly summary passed; the council said written summaries should help members keep up with major decisions without requiring frequent in-person reports.
The council also approved an amended 2026 salary ordinance and finalized its 2026 meeting schedule, keeping regular meetings at 3 p.m. and scheduling additional morning sessions for budget hearings. The meeting adjourned after no public comment was offered.
