Sheriff Noah Robinson told the Vanderburgh County Council the county applied for and received a FEMA port security grant to acquire a river patrol craft and now seeks eligibility to pursue an Indiana DNR marine activities grant that could reimburse fuel, maintenance and personnel costs for the vessel.
Robinson said the DNR grant would be reimbursable — the department would spend funds during the season and submit receipts for repayment in October — and requires no local match. The sheriff also described a joint arrangement with the Evansville Police Department to share patrol duties and noted county staff would ask the auditor to create a fund to receive grant proceeds if the county is selected.
Council members welcomed the partnership and the opportunity to restore a river presence; several thanked officers and grant staff for doing the legwork. The council approved DNR boat‑grant eligibility on a voice vote.
What’s next: Sheriff’s office will submit the formal grant application and, if awarded, the auditor will establish a fund to manage reimbursements.
