Cramerton holds candidates session; election calendar reviewed and mayor urges respectful campaigns

Town staff hosted a candidate session Aug. 1 where the election calendar and political sign rules were reviewed. Mayor Nelson Wills asked candidates to keep campaigns respectful; a resident asked the board to consider cutting the town tax rate.
Town Manager Zach Ollis opened a candidates session at the Cramerton Board of Commissioners meeting Aug. 1, and Town Attorney Karen Wolter reviewed the municipal election calendar. Wolter told attendees that Oct. 13 is the last day to register to vote, early voting begins Oct. 19, early voting ends Nov. 4 and Nov. 7 is voting day.
The board discussed political sign regulations at the session. Four of six candidates introduced themselves to the audience: Kelly Newman (candidate), Josh Julian (candidate), Commissioner Richard Atkinson and Commissioner Houston Helms. Mayor Nelson Wills briefly addressed the candidates and requested that campaigns remain clean and respectful. He also presented the Town of Cramerton project list to those present.
During the public-comment period, Tony Goff of 407 Holly Drive urged the board to consider a reduction in the town’s tax rate in the next budget cycle, saying the town could have done more to lower the 2023–2024 rate. The board did not take formal action on the tax-rate request at the meeting.
The meeting proceeded with routine business after the candidate session and was adjourned following a motion by Mayor Pro Tempore Neeley that passed 5-0.
