Cramerton board approves advertisement of solid-waste RFP with multi-term options

The Cramerton Board of Commissioners on Aug. 15 directed town staff to advertise a request for proposals for the town’s solid‑waste services, approving a draft RFP that outlines several contract options.
Town Manager Zach Ollis described the procurement choices the town will solicit: a base five‑year term; an alternate five‑year bid that adds new collection vehicles, service verification and asset management; a 10‑year bid with new vehicles, service verification, asset management and an automated vehicle‑locator system; and a 10‑year bid with a web portal and new collection vehicles. Ollis said the options are intended to let bidders propose differing combinations of term length, equipment investment and technology features.
Commissioner Tony Helms moved to approve the RFP for advertisement; Commissioner Kincaid seconded and the motion passed unanimously, 5–0. The board did not adopt a preferred contract length at the meeting, instead authorizing staff to solicit proposals that allow the board to compare costs and service features.
Why it matters: the contract will set collection terms, equipment expectations and service‑verification procedures that affect resident service levels and town maintenance costs for years. A longer term could secure newer vehicles and tracking systems but also extend the town’s commitment if service levels or costs later prove unsatisfactory.
The town packet lists the alternative bid elements the board approved for solicitation; the RFP timeline and evaluation criteria will be set by staff and brought back to the board for award recommendation at a later meeting.
