Clinton County Legislature backs SkyWest as Essential Air Service carrier

The Clinton County Legislature unanimously voted on Jan. 24, 2018 to recommend that the U.S. Department of Transportation award the county's Essential Air Service (EAS) contract to SkyWest Airlines.
The move drew praise from county leaders and members of the public who said SkyWest, operating as United Express into Washington, D.C., will expand passenger options and strengthen the local economy. "This will bring more travelers to the Plattsburgh International Airport which will be great for the economy," Legislator Simon Conroy said. Legislator Christopher Rosenquest said the county and staff had worked hard on the matter and acknowledged the transition will affect some people who previously used PenAir.
Dr. Robert Heins, a former county legislator who chaired the Plattsburgh International Airport Committee, congratulated the Legislature and county staff for securing the new service and thanked County Administrator Michael Zurlo, Deputy County Administrator Rodney Brown and Airport Manager Chris Kreig for their roles. "They took a leap of faith," Heins said, commending earlier visionaries for laying the groundwork.
Legislator Mark Dame framed the decision as validation of earlier county investment in the airport: "This validates the $40 million investment taken a few years ago," he said, and urged continued advocacy to ensure the Department of Transportation selects the airline. Chairperson Harry McManus said the county would send a unanimous letter of support to USDOT and expected supportive letters from the City and Town of Plattsburgh and local businesses.
The resolution recommending SkyWest was carried 9-0-0. The Legislature noted letters of support from community organizations were being solicited and that Airport Committee and county staff would continue coordination while DOT makes its selection.
