Summary
Staff sought consensus on wording for an interpretive plaque for the proposed Dr. Robert B. Hayling Plaza; commissioners recommended shorter text for a primary plaque, additional printed panels or multiple markers for fuller context, and including QR codes linking to more information, with staff to return with designs.
The CRA signaled support for proceeding with an interpretive plaque and associated signage for the proposed Dr. Robert B. Hayling Plaza, a key element of planned park improvements.
Jamie D. Perkins presented draft plaque language prepared in consultation with the Hayling family and the ACCORD Museum, and asked the board whether to seek formal approval or a consensus to proceed. Commissioners praised the draft language but raised concerns that the full text was too long for a single raised-bronze marker. Several members suggested a shorter quotation or primary plaque at the statue base, supported by multiple explanatory panels around the plaza or a printed display with photos.
Perkins said staff are considering raised-bronze lettering consistent with other historic markers but also plan to incorporate QR codes that would link to an online landing page with extended content about Dr. Robert B. Hayling and other leaders to be featured in the park. Commissioners recommended creative, age-friendly ways to present the material (multi-panel arrangements, quotes on the statue base and supplementary printed displays). Perkins said she would work with the landscape architect and the ACCORD Museum, return with design mockups and, if needed, updated funding options at a future meeting.
