Board approves hires in Sheriff's Office after commissioner questions about process

The Macon County Board of Commissioners on June 10 voted unanimously to approve two hires in the Sheriff's Office after public discussion about hiring relatives.
Commissioner Shearl removed the item from the consent agenda and asked whether the positions were advertised, how applicants were vetted, and what qualifications made family members preferable. Sheriff Brent Holbrooks said the roles were advertised and that multiple applications were received; he added that both hires are related by marriage and that the sheriff's office faces recruitment challenges. "People are not willing to come to work for $17.00 per hour when they can go to Cookout and get paid more," Holbrooks said, explaining part of the staffing difficulty.
Holbrooks said he was not on the interview panel; five people served on the panel, including a member of the Town of Franklin Police Department. After discussion, Commissioner Breeden moved and Commissioner Antoine seconded approval of the hires. The board approved the hiring of Detention Officer Kaylee Jenkins and part-time School Resource Officer Tracy Chastain unanimously.
The board did not record any restrictions or conditions on the hires at the meeting. The personnel approvals were moved from the consent agenda to New Business for public discussion at Commissioner Shearl's request.
