Macon County rejects landfill Cell 2 bids; board votes to rebid amid financial concerns

Macon County commissioners on Sept. 9 rejected all bids for construction of landfill Cell 2 and directed county staff to rebid the project with revised contractor pre-qualifications.
Interim Solid Waste Director Jaimie Picou presented a status report on landfill capacity, potential cell construction, hauling options and fee-structure changes. The presentation outlined the need to decide whether to accept current bids, which were higher than expected, or delay decisions until additional shipping-cost information is available in October. County Manager Warren Cabe framed the decision as one requiring fiscal caution during a period of uncertain hauling expenses.
Commissioner Josh Young moved, and Commissioner Shields seconded, to reject the previously received bids due to financial restraints and to rebid the Cell 2 construction contract with updated pre-qualification criteria for contractors. The board voted unanimously.
The minutes do not include the rebid schedule or projected new costs; staff indicated additional financial details and shipping-cost estimates are expected by the October meeting.
