Macon County amends landfill contract and approves $181,120 architectural contract for armory renovation

County Manager Warren Cabe told commissioners that the county reopened bidding for a landfill cell and that several contract and budget adjustments were required to proceed. He requested an appropriation of $97,000 from the Solid Waste fund and an amendment to McGill Associates’ contract in the same amount to complete the work; Mark Cathey of McGill Associates explained the new proposal. Commissioner Josh Young moved to approve the appropriation and amendment; Commissioner Shields seconded and the vote was unanimous.
Cabe also reviewed plans to renovate the National Guard Armory under a 2021 lease with Southwestern Community College. He said three design proposals were received and requested approval of Looper Architectural Services for design development through construction at a cost of $181,120.53. Cabe said those funds are already included in an SCC fund and will be moved into the project fund; the board approved the contract on a motion by Commissioner Shields, seconded by Commissioner Shearl.
Cabe recommended that staff review fire-department contracting procedures based on lessons learned in other recent department transitions; no formal action was taken on that recommendation during the meeting.
The appropriation and contract approvals allow staff to finalize bids and move forward with design and construction procurement on both projects.
