Macon County commissioners adopt resolution asking legislature to permit revision of election districts

The Macon County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt an updated resolution asking the North Carolina General Assembly to grant the county authority to determine how its commissioner voting districts are divided.
County Attorney Eric Ridenour reviewed the resolution, which updates a measure the board adopted in 2023. The resolution notes the current five-member board has been elected from three districts since 1978 and explains that the proposed change would allow the county to alter district boundaries so that the staggered filing and election schedules are more equitable; the board requested the change to take effect beginning with the 2028 elections.
After discussion, Commissioner Shearl moved to approve the resolution and Commissioner Antoine seconded. The minutes record Commissioners Shearl, Antoine, Breeden and Shields voting in favor and Chairman Josh Young opposed, a 4–1 vote. The board directed that the resolution be forwarded to the county’s state senator and representative and be retained in the clerk’s record.
