At a Jan. 12 work session, the Ware County Board of Commissioners reviewed a proposed airport land lease that would allow Michael and Vickie Franklin to build a private aircraft hangar on a 60‑by‑100‑foot parcel at the Waycross‑Ware County Airport.
Airport Manager and Fire Chief Dee Meadows told the commission the parcel is roughly 6,000 square feet and the annual lease rate is $0.04 per square foot, or $240 per year. County Manager James Shubert said the hangar drawing in the agenda packet shows the structure at an angle but that it likely will be rotated to sit parallel to the apron.
Chief Meadows also asked permission to obtain prices to grub acreage where timber was cut in 2025 to clean the land and prepare it for future use; the commission consented to seek pricing, and Commissioner Timmy Lucas asked that staff, if possible, prefer a local vendor for the work. The commission added the hangar lease to the regular meeting agenda for formal consideration.
The work session did not include a final vote on the lease; the item will return for action at the regular meeting where contract terms and placement will be considered.
