Commissioners approve Lakeshore Furniture after split vote on higher bid

Commissioner Joel McCormick questioned the board’s choice to accept a higher Integrity bid earlier in the meeting, saying, “In my experience, public work requests are approved based on the lowest bid.” Commissioners Beggs and Hardy defended choosing vendors with proven past performance and familiarity with county installations.
After the initial motion to accept Integrity’s $9,780.99 quote failed on a roll call, McCormick and Erickson moved to accept Lakeshore’s lower bid; that motion passed on a unanimous roll-call vote. The purchase will be charged to the Building Department fund.
The board packet included four written quotes: Lakeshore Furniture ($8,167.22), Integrity Business Solutions ($9,780.99), Taylor Office Furniture ($11,111.00), and Excel Office Interiors ($15,284.83). Administrator Tracy Byard also noted a Shelby-based company, Media Technologies, submitted a quote exceeding $33,000 and said another quote may be provided but is not expected to be lower than the existing bids.
The Board did not record a departmental recommendation for a specific vendor in the packet; commissioners who favored Integrity cited the company’s prior service to the county as a deciding factor. The transaction was approved with funds coming from the Building Department fund.
The meeting record shows the procurement decision occurred during the Board’s regular meeting on Jan. 23, 2025; the Properties Committee had discussed the same quotes earlier that morning.
