Life EMS reports full staffing; county accepts AED donation and weighs license-plate reader system

At the Courts & Public Safety Committee meeting on Feb. 13, Life EMS Director of North Operations Jeff Stockhill said Life EMS is fully staffed with EMTs and paramedics and that one EMT is pursuing paramedic licensure. Stockhill described coverage protocols and said, "There is never a plan for less than three ambulances," noting station coverage adjustments when boundary issues arise.
The board accepted a $1,713 donation to the Sheriff’s Department from the Community Foundation to purchase an AED and authorized the administrator to make necessary budget adjustments (Motion #2025-15). The motion passed by roll call at the full board meeting with unanimous votes from present commissioners; the donation was noted in committee discussion and Undersheriff Ryan Schiller asked the board to pass on the board’s thanks to donor Dave Nobles.
Committee members also discussed operational items from the Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control, including Animal Control’s truck request brought forward to the full board. Undersheriff Schiller reported on the marine patrol division filling a sergeant position and presented information on a Flock license-plate reader (LPR) platform. Schiller said the tool has helped solve crimes at a significant rate and that approximately 90,000 systems exist nationally with 2,200 in Michigan; he told the committee the first-year cost would be $3,650.
Commissioners Walker and Beggs expressed reservations about data use and privacy implications of LPR systems; the committee discussion did not result in a procurement vote at this meeting. The committee also heard Parks & Recreation plans for ADA walkways and a Marshville Dam timeline and Emergency Management reports on grant awards and planned multi-county exercises.
No public comment was recorded; the committee adjourned at 10:55 a.m.
