Oceana County board approves staffing, grants and budgets in unanimous votes

The Oceana County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 27 approved a slate of administrative and budget items, voting unanimously on motions covering staffing, procurement, grants and claims.
The board adopted Motion #2025-21 to allow the Drain Commission to hire a full-time employee primarily assigned to the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC) program. The motion, moved by Commissioner McCormick and supported by Commissioner Erickson, passed on a roll-call vote with Commissioners McCormick, Erickson, Beggs, Hardy and Walker voting yes.
Also approved was Motion #2025-25, moved by Commissioner Erickson and supported by Commissioner Hardy, authorizing the county administrator to seek bids via an RFP for cleaning services covering the Health Department, the Community Services Building and the County Courthouse.
The board confirmed two appointments to the Veterans Affairs Committee with Motion #2025-26, moved by Commissioner Beggs and supported by Commissioner McCormick, appointing Trisha Marsh and Benjamin Bone to three-year terms ending Dec. 31, 2027.
Parks-related grant authorizations passed as well. Motion #2025-27 authorizes a $5,000 Community Foundation grant application to fund two concrete bench pads at Cedar Point Park for ADA access; Motion #2025-28 authorizes a $3,800 GLE Peoples Fund application for a concrete driveway to provide stable vehicle access for utility work at the park. Both motions passed by roll call.
The board adopted Motion #2025-29 approving the Oceana County materials management budget: $83,330 annually for 2025–2028 and $70,000 for 2029. Administrator Byard and Chairperson Walker noted the budget is structured to be reimbursed by the state; the county must establish the budget to receive and disburse those funds.
Finally, the board adopted Motion #2025-30 approving payment of accounts payable and release of funds for Feb. 27, 2025. The meeting materials listed a grand total of $710,626.23 across funds, with individual fund details provided in the administrator’s materials.
