Nemaha County commissioners approve 10% pay increase for county officials, set 4% annual raises

The Nemaha County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 5 to raise county elected officials’ salaries for 2027–2030 by 10% and to apply a 4% annual increase thereafter.
Chairman Mike Weiss called the special meeting to order in the commissioners’ chambers at the Nemaha County Courthouse in Auburn. County Sheriff Brent Lottman presented an Excel spreadsheet that laid out three salary scenarios: an 8% increase with 4% annual increases, a 10% increase with 3.5% annual increases, and a 12% increase with 3% annual increases.
Commissioner Mike Hall moved to adopt the 10% initial increase with a 4% annual escalation; Commissioner Bryan Mellage seconded. The motion passed on a roll call vote: Mellage, aye; Weiss, nay; Hall, aye. The board’s action establishes the salary schedule for county officials for the 2027–2030 period as described in the motion.
Chairman Weiss also proposed an additional $11,000 per year for the County Assessor to cover duties described as appraiser. That motion failed for lack of a second and was not taken to a roll call vote.
With no further business, Commissioner Mellage moved to adjourn; Chairman Weiss seconded, and the board adjourned unanimously.
