The Alief ISD Board of Trustees on Feb. 17 voted to uphold a level 2 decision in a grievance filed by a teacher at Albright Middle School and declined to grant an oral hearing.
A trustee moved “that the board of trustees uphold the level 2 decision without additional need for an oral hearing based on the board’s review and consideration of the record and the argument presented,” and Trustee Spurlock seconded the motion. The Board President announced, “The item passes.”
A district staff member explained the district’s bifurcated level 3 grievance process, saying the board first reviews the written record and any additional written arguments to decide whether an oral hearing is warranted. “The board’s role at this stage … is to determine whether the level 1 and level 2 decision as well as the record are compliant with the law, compliant with board policy, and are fair to the parties,” the staff member said.
The Board President also told the board that a separate grievance involving a teacher from Elsick High School was remanded back to level 2 for further consideration rather than advancing to an oral hearing at this time.
The board adjourned at 11:16 p.m.
