Cherokee County commissioners elect Alan Bryant chairman in 3-2 vote at organizational meeting

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners elected Commissioner Alan Bryant chairman in a 3-2 vote during its organizational meeting on Dec. 1, 2025, at the Cherokee County Courthouse. The board also appointed Commissioner Cal Stiles as vice-chair in a separate 3-2 vote and reviewed county surety bond amounts with no changes.
The meeting opened at 6:30 p.m., with the Clerk to the Board reading the ethics statement and recording attendance. Commissioners present were Alan Bryant, Cal Stiles, Dr. Dan Eichenbaum, Ben Adams and Mark Stiles; county staff in attendance included County Manager Randy Wiggins, Chief Financial Officer Candy Anderson, Assistant County Manager/Clerk to the Board Maria Hass and County Attorney Darryl Brown.
The first ballot produced two nominations for chairman. Commissioner Mark Stiles moved to nominate Commissioner Ben Adams, a motion seconded by Commissioner Ben Adams; that nomination failed when only Commissioners Mark Stiles and Ben Adams voted in favor. Commissioner Eichenbaum then moved, and Commissioner Cal Stiles seconded, to nominate Commissioner Alan Bryant. That motion passed 3-2: Commissioners Cal Stiles, Dr. Dan Eichenbaum and Alan Bryant voted in favor; Commissioners Mark Stiles and Ben Adams voted against.
Following the chair vote, Commissioner Bryant moved — and Commissioner Eichenbaum seconded — to nominate Commissioner Cal Stiles for vice-chair. No other nominations were made; the motion to appoint Cal Stiles passed 3-2, with Commissioners Eichenbaum, Bryant and Cal Stiles voting in favor and Commissioners Mark Stiles and Ben Adams voting against.
The board then reviewed public-official bond amounts as required by G.S. 58-72-20. The minutes record current bond amounts as: Finance Officer $1,000,000; Tax Collector $100,000; Register of Deeds $10,000; and Sheriff $25,000. The board made no changes to those amounts.
Commissioner Eichenbaum moved to adjourn the organizational meeting; Commissioner Cal Stiles seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The minutes note these organizational minutes were approved at a regular meeting on Jan. 20, 2026.
