Cherokee County commissioners approve budget revisions, accept $485,000 property bid and award retiree firearms

At their July 29 meeting the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved several budget revisions and fee changes, accepted a $485,000 bid for 59 Hiwassee Street, accepted a donated lot, awarded county-issued firearms to two retirees and scheduled rebid of a Senior/VA facility project.
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved multiple budget revisions and routine motions at its July 29, 2025 meeting, including purchases for county operations and use of fund balance for roofing at the TCCC building.
Chairman Dr. Dan Eichenbaum presided as the board approved contingency-funded items including an excavator thumb and warranty for the landfill ($17,037), a contract for jail medical billing scrubbing ($10,000), two tankless water heaters for the Detention Center ($7,242), and a zero-turn John Deere mower for Parks and Recreation ($16,507). The board also approved using $432,032 of fund balance for TCCC roofing projects.
The board accepted a donation of Lot 36 in Angel Mountain Estates (1.04 acres; tax valuation $21,600) and accepted a sole bid of $485,000 for 59 Hiwassee Street. Commissioner Ben Adams moved to accept the 59 Hiwassee Street bid; Commissioner Cal Stiles seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. A $200 bid from Stacy Howard for a 2004 Chevy Tahoe owned by Parks and Recreation was also accepted after the original online bidder failed to complete the sale.
The commission approved a pair of resolutions awarding county-issued firearms to law enforcement retirees Paul Fry and Montgomery Ward; both resolutions passed unanimously. The board also instructed the county attorney to draft a license-agreement template for county property use and granted the county manager authority to execute such licenses once approved.
On tax matters, the board approved the Tax Release Report, Tax Refund Report and NCVTS Refund Report, and revised the "Resolution to Establish Minimum Tax," increasing the minimum bill from $2.00 to $5.00 per the Tax Assessor’s recommendation to offset increased billing and postage costs. The board adopted a new resolution establishing formal policy and procedures for residual tax values of personal property to replace the 2015 policy.
County Manager Randy Wiggins told the board that the Senior/Veterans Services facility received no bids on its first advertisement; the project has been re-advertised with bids due August 6 and responses to be presented at the board’s August 18 meeting. The board entered closed session to discuss a personnel matter involving a health department employee's pay request; after returning to open session no action was taken.
The meeting adjourned by unanimous vote.
