Commissioners allow Cherokee County Schools to solicit RFPs for proposed consolidated Pre-K–8 facility

Representatives of Cherokee County Schools presented a proposal for a consolidated Pre-K through 8th grade facility at the board’s Sept. 15 meeting. Dr. Keevin Woody and Steve Coleman outlined the district’s intent to consolidate grades but did not present preliminary plans, cost estimates or a schedule for public engagement.
Chairman Dr. Dan Eichenbaum and other commissioners said the absence of drawings, budgets and community meetings prevented the board from supporting the plan as presented. Dr. Eichenbaum encouraged Cherokee County Schools to hold public meetings to gather input from residents.
On a motion by Commissioner Cal Stiles, seconded by Commissioner Ben Adams, the board voted unanimously to allow the school system to solicit requests for proposals for planning services. The school district is to return to the board with proposed costs; if the board approves, the project would be funded using Article 40/42 sales tax revenues.
No final commitment of county funds was made at the meeting. The next steps specified by commissioners are for the district to solicit RFPs for planning, present cost estimates and hold public meetings to provide community input before the board will consider final approval.
