Cherokee County commissioners unanimously adopt FY2026 budget and approve $20.8M school project closeout, EMS station funding

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners adopted the county's FY2026 budget and approved several capital project ordinances and equipment expenditures at its June 16, 2025 meeting.
In the meeting's key fiscal actions, the board approved a FY-end budget revision of $340,821 and adopted the FY2026 Budget Ordinance. Commissioners also approved a Capital Project Ordinance to close out the Schools of Innovation and Technology project for $20,822,301 and a Capital Project Ordinance for EMS Station 2 in the amount of $714,700. The board approved a Capital Project Ordinance for construction of a new mechanic's building at the landfill for $496,276 and authorized the FY2025 audit contract for a price not to exceed $51,045.
The board approved Cherokee County Schools' request to use NCDOT reimbursement from the Hiwassee Dam paving project ($38,761) for maintenance or other projects and separately approved use of Article 40/42 sales tax funds ($38,694) for school projects. Commissioners deferred consideration of quotes for a new sound system in the commissioners' boardroom to the July meeting.
Several public-safety and equipment expenditures were authorized using rescue funds: $54,690 for a swift-water response boat with sonar for Hiwassee Dam Volunteer Fire Department; $4,000 for a skid unit for Wolf Creek Fire Department; $28,135.15 for various rescue equipment for Valleytown Fire Department; and $2,171.30 for rescue gear for the Cherokee County Search and Rescue Team. The board also voted to increase airport ramp and landing fees from $75 to $100.
Other approvals included use of $23,435 in unspent elevator funds to complete a playground and basketball court at Texana Community Center, a waiver of tipping and building permit fees for the Tri-County Community College Workforce Development Office's Cherokee County Housing Project in Andrews, and permission for the Murphy Booster Club to use pickleball courts at Konehete Park for a fundraiser on Aug. 9.
All motions recorded in the minutes passed unanimously.
The board will consider quotes for the boardroom sound system at its July meeting.
