Cherokee County commissioners unanimously approve budget revisions, property sales and program funding

At their April 21 meeting the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved multiple budget revisions and resolutions, including grants and purchases for public safety, school funding reallocations, three property-auction authorizations and adoption of an opioid-settlement funded substance-use program.
The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners on April 21 unanimously approved a slate of budget revisions, property-sale resolutions and program authorizations that the board said will fund public-safety equipment, school operating costs and various facility repairs.
Among the actions taken, the board approved using $204,000 in Article 40/42 sales-tax proceeds for MMS bathroom professional services and voted to apply a separate $462,453 sales-tax refund from the Schools of Innovation and Technology project toward Cherokee County Schools’ operational costs to reduce the local appropriation. The board also approved a $42,300 vehicle purchase for the health department, a $50,000 budget revision to audit the sheriff’s evidence room and multiple small grants and reimbursements, all by unanimous votes.
The board approved resolutions authorizing the electronic public-auction sale of three parcels (Choctaw Ridge Trail, Granny Squirrel Drive and Morris Ridge Drive) and accepted tax releases and refund reports. Commissioners also accepted late property-tax-exemption applications for Bates Creek Baptist Church and for Tammi Smith (Appalachian Lady Homesteaders).
Other approved items included funding allocations and reimbursements for volunteer fire departments and rescue equipment (requests from Peachtree VFD and Hiwassee Dam VFD), a $25,000 matching award to the Cherokee County Saddle Club for arena repairs, and reimbursement of $2,783.48 to the Cherokee County Parents Athletics Association for its annual insurance premium.
The board approved a $8,579 seasonal, part-time airport hire for the remainder of FY25 and approved the health department vehicle purchase. Commissioners also authorized Cherokee County Emergency Management to apply for a Duke Energy grant to purchase a four-passenger side-by-side vehicle.
Most motions were moved and seconded by various commissioners with votes recorded as passing unanimously; individual vote tallies by name were not recorded in the minutes. The meeting also included routine proclamations and the approval of Agreement Addendum 2 to the memorandum of agreement involving the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the North Carolina Division of Public Health and the Cherokee County Health Department.
The meeting adjourned after the board voted to reschedule its May 19 meeting to May 20.
