Alief ISD board approves committee assignments, adds Trustee Isaac Perez

The Alief ISD Board of Trustees voted Feb. 3 to approve its committee assignments and add Trustee Isaac Perez to the Board Operating Procedures committee and the Financial Audit Committee. The motion carried with five votes in favor, zero opposed and one abstention.

Board President Dr. Darlene Breaux presented the slate of assignments under board policy BDB and the board operating procedures, saying the practice supports transparency about trustees’ work outside regular meetings. The assignments included a standing Audit/Financial committee, a Policy committee, a Safety and Security committee and others tied to district priorities.

Trustee Isaac Perez asked to be added to the Board Operating Procedures and the audit committee; the board discussed whether the audit meeting would be considered a standing committee meeting or posted as a board meeting. A staff member explained the audit reviews have historically been prereviews open to board members and that some audit meetings are posted as board meetings to avoid quorum issues.

Trustee Lily Truong moved to approve the committee assignments with Trustee Perez included; Trustee Spurlock seconded. President Breaux called the question and the board recorded five affirmative votes and one abstention, resulting in approval of the assignments.

Board members said the formalization clarifies who will be expected at prereview sessions and ensures a minimum membership while keeping the meetings open for other trustees’ attendance.

The board will continue to annually review and accept suggested revisions to the board operating procedures, per the board’s established cadence.
