Portage County’s highway committee approved several 2026 equipment purchases intended to address supply chain issues and maintain consistency across the county fleet.
Staff explained that the best option for truck bodies was purchasing through a Minnesota DOT contract with Universal Truck, noting a roughly 5% increase in underbodies and an additional $4,300 per unit for side-plate assemblies the county cannot economically build in-house. The staff member recommended approval, saying the selected vendor offered a cost and operational benefit compared with building parts locally.
The committee also approved a single-source purchase of snow-and-ice equipment through BERC to keep components uniform across patrol trucks. Staff presented a total price of $104,595 and said component consistency reduces mechanic and operator complications. The chair called the motions and, hearing no opposition, the purchases were approved.
Members asked staff to reevaluate vendor pricing next year and to solicit comparative quotes for future procurements. Staff said they would bring a broader vendor comparison to the committee in the next year.
