Jennifer Akins, the districts Chief School Improvement and Federal Programs Officer, presented the 2025 Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR) during a public hearing at the Feb. 16 McKinney ISD Board meeting, summarizing academic performance, subgroup results, safety incidents and financial comparisons.
Akins told trustees MISD posted an overall growth of four percentage points on district ratings and reported a federal graduation rate of 98.8% for the Class of 2025. She said 75% of students attend an A-rated campus and highlighted gains in third-grade reading (up four points) and third-grade math (up five points). Akins also noted the district had two felony-controlled-substance offenses in the reporting year, down from eight the prior year, and said there were "very few repeat offenders" in campus incident counts.
Trustees asked detailed follow-ups about College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR) drivers and staff diversity. Trustee Huwaca (S20) asked what contributed most to MISDs top ranking among the 100 largest Texas districts for college-ready graduates; Akins attributed the result to offering multiple pathways for students to demonstrate readiness, including industry certifications, dual credit and military readiness indicators. Board members also raised the gap between student demographics and teacher demographics; Akins said the district is pursuing talent pipelines and mentorship programs to recruit and retain a more diverse teaching workforce.
Akins reminded the public that the TAPR and related federal and state report cards are posted on the district website and that the Special Education Determination status "meets requirements." Board discussion emphasized both pride in academic results and the need to continue efforts on teacher diversity and career readiness opportunities.
